As discussed in the one-day workshop on energy efficiency, held recently in Nassau, staged by the private sector arm of the Inter-American Development Bank, it was made very clear that "Most people don't know what their energy costs are," and "So those costs are not managed. But improvements in energy efficiency can easily achieve a savings of 15 per cent, and 30 per cent is feasible. And whatever savings you achieve will only grow as energy costs rise over time, whereas if don't do it you lose those savings forever."

The point is that to do "nothing" wastes valuable energy dollars that could be better spent in other areas of business such as employee rentention benefits, advertising or promotion.

Energy savings "do not happen by accident" and it takes a deliberate effort to follow and implement an "energy reduction plan". HDC Development Corp, a locally owned Bahamian Corporation that supplies a full range of certified "green products" has been offering "free" energy reduction plans for Bahamian business owners since 2007.

And as Pierre Langlois, president of Econoler International, mentioned in the workshop, "improvements in energy efficiency can easily achieve a savings of 15 per cent, and 30 per cent is feasible." We couldn't agree more! Simple steps towards energy efficiency can be implemented cost effectively here in the Bahamas too!

I attended the work shop that day, and although I did not learn anything new, I'm sure it was an eye opener for most of us there who do not work in the energy sector.
I was amazed that most of the SME owners present where not even aware that we do have most of these programs and applications available in the Bahamas.
As much as we, the private sector advertise and promote this new road, there is still a long way to go as far as educating the general public is concerned. Maybe Private and Public sectors could or should team up, and start this educational reform and change the publics mind set. Maybe some open forums in a town meeting setting would be a good way to start.
